This weeks awesome catch is the TEXAS RIG

Key Points

  • Hooks

  • Recommended Plastics

  • Weighting

  • Tips on fishing it

First off let's start with the most key factor here and talk about the hooks. Some pics will be below of some of the most common Texas Rig hooks. They are know for the weedless setup they create allowing you to fish basically anywhere. Hooks comes in different sizes and some have weights allowing you to use it to however you need. They do offer EWG hooks and these allow more space if you want a thicker bait or it can give a smaller bait more room to collapse. This allows the hook point a little more chance to stick and could possibly help short strike bites.

Moving on to the recommended plastics used with the Texas Rig and some tips on rigging them. First off the senko, which I used most of my early fishing career and caught many fish on. Works all times of the year and can be used many ways. Second we have the creature bait like a beaver, brush hawg, or even a tube. This helps from having to re-tie weedless tubes every time one comes off. Third is swim baits and is used on mostly smaller to medium size ones, while larger swimbaits you probably should use a swimbait hook. Flukes also fit in this category and are great weighted or weightless. Feel free to try whatever Texas Rigged because it is just such a versatile way to fish.

Weighting the Texas Rig can be a very effective way to change up the presentation and action of the bait. Their are many ways to weight the Texas Rig and I personally use a way which i don't know if many do. Their are some common weights like the bullet weights, which allow the line to slide through it. This can help the bait stay super finesse and float up even with a little bit of slack. Bobber stops can be used to control how far the weight can move or how far the bait can move from the weight when on the bottom. Another way I use a weight is a dropshot weight on it. This keeps the bait on the bottom and allows it to have good action. Great for dragging hopping, or in-between.

Lastly let's take a deep dive into tips on fishing it. Basically the Texas Rig can be fished everywhere which is a good thing. Lets talk worms and creatures cause they go hand in hand and I would say are the most used Texas Rigged baits out there. We will go with prime bite times like spring and fall and talk about those first. Obviously fish can stubborn and want certain presentations but generally speaking in these time of the year, I work these baits more at a medium to medium fast speed. 1-2 seconds in between hops and dragging it as well. Another thing is do not be afraid to throw in the same spot multiple times and by multiple I mean like 7-8 times. If you see a log, brush or a any piece of structure you may need to cast 3 or 4 times at each side just to get that fish to bite. Also if they are being picky maybe make your weight lighter or heavier to give them just the action they want. Remember its not you that's doing anything wrong, that one just needed some sweet talking. Rolling on to swimbaits and the details that comes with fishing them. Many hooks can be used with swimbaits but today we are just talking Texas Rig. I think EWG hooks are best for swimbaits because they allow room for the bait to collapse causing the hook point to have just a little more room to find a sticking point. The EWG allows you to also put larger swimbaits on and still work great and keep good action. These can be weighted just as well and I recommend a fixed weight on something like a Texas Rig jighead. It can be fished however you like fast, slow, twitchy, shaking, or even on the fall. That the Texas Rig.

Thanks for reading, and if you enjoyed a like would be appreciated and enjoy your fishing. Always going to try and improve and bring you guys what you want.

Tight lines.
