Going back the the basics this week. Basically as simple as casting and reeling but is it really that simple? First off you need a set of rods and reels. Lots of the time you can acquire these from elders in the family or friends that just don't fish as much anymore. Most people would rather see their stuff go to a good home. Now to the rods and reel, you DO NOT need anything fancy. Get the basics in the beginning and use the shit out of them. That is what they are for. Now I suggest 1 spinning and 1 baitcaster but 2 spinning rods will work as well. Baitcasters struggle at throwing the lighter lures and that's why I suggest 1 and 1 or 2 spinning. They both have things they excel at but they both can be used on different lures. When you decide to invest in some quality reels do research and look for auctions or sites like ebay or whatnot for deals. This helps save some of the wallet in the long run. You will appreciate the quality better in the end if you get the basics and understand the uses first so you can make mistakes(Like me putting a rod tip in the ceiling fan).
We've talked about the rods and reels but it is more than that. The gear involved is essential too. I suggest a gear bag or box you can take with you even if you go with someone else on their boat. Just a nice thing to have and in that i suggest pliers, scissors, some tackle, some terminal, lines, and tools needed for reels/lures. Now if this is in same bag as tackle you could leave it out. But I suggest long and short scissors and pliers just for when you need them. It makes things nice. A good pair of sidecuts is helpful because if a hook was to get stuck in you, sidedcuts allow you to cut it off no matter what. Just having these things can help fishing go a bit more smooth even when not needed.
Baits and tackle are something that is crazy today. Their is so much tackle on the market and I'm not gonna lie, a lot of it is good. Now some of it is bogus and is just a gimmick to try and sell you something. But some bait companies are just phenomenal with their lures and they are always innovating. Sometimes overdoing it to the point where we ask what is this thing but we must always explore all the options as anglers. This all being said SLOWLY invest and buy into your niche and what you like to fish. Nerd out and indulge in the awesomeness of lures. Explore them look at them study them and buy some. I recommend for a newcomer a spinnerbait, a jig, a worm and EWG hook, and a jerkbait. Ill save the explanations of these baits for others posts cause they will be most certainly be covered. You can see the texas rig post already to see some worm ewg tips and advice.
Fishing can be just casting, waiting for a bite and then reeling in. Or you can be on the hunt and hone your skills to give you the best chance to get that trophy bite. First casting in in general and power casting and precision casting. I find it easier for me to be more precise with a baitcaster and i can cast longer with a spinning. You should practice both casting far and short with both reel types. This can be done by tying a lure with no hooks on and casting outside. Also flipping is important to perfect because sometimes this thickness of the grass only allows that bait to go straight down. In this case you have to aim for right on top of where you want to drop down to and you have to be precise. Another thing is adjust the brake and tension knobs on your baitcaster. This will be covered in another post and can help you cast better.
Last thing for the catch this week is etiquette. Fishing goes a long way with manners and most of the time people are respectful. Don't get me wrong people can be assholes and just ruin it for everyone but lets forget those. I always try to pick up my fishing spots and leave it better than when I came. This goes a long way with proper care of the lake and habitat around it, as well as just the appeal itself. Nobody wants to go to a trashy pond or boat ramp. Last always help each other out and treat everyone with respect.
As Always, thanks for reading, and if you enjoyed a like would be appreciated and enjoy your fishing. Always going to try and improve and bring you guys what you want.
Tight lines.
